This estimate uses RER = 70 × body weight0.75, then applies the selected maintenance factor. It is a starting point for healthy dogs, not a prescription. Individual needs can vary substantially.

Dogs of the same weight can have different energy requirements because of body composition, breed, activity, age, environment, health, and individual metabolism. Review weight and body condition regularly instead of treating one calculation as permanent.
Seek individualized veterinary nutrition advice for disease, pregnancy, lactation, recovery, therapeutic diets, unexplained weight change, or intentional weight loss. Puppies—especially large-breed puppies—also need a complete growth diet with appropriate nutrient balance.
Start by calculating resting energy requirement from body weight, then apply an appropriate maintenance factor. The result is an estimate for a healthy dog and should be adjusted according to body condition and veterinary guidance.
Use current weight when your dog is at an appropriate body condition. If your dog is underweight or overweight, ask a veterinarian which target weight and nutrition plan should be used.
Find kcal per cup on the food label or manufacturer information. Divide estimated daily calories by kcal per cup. Different foods have different energy densities, so there is no universal cup amount.
Healthy growing puppies have higher energy needs relative to their body weight. The calculator uses separate documented factors for puppies under and over four months.
Maintenance-energy references commonly use different starting factors for healthy intact and neutered adults. Individual activity, body condition, breed and environment can still change actual needs.
Not as a treatment plan. Intentional weight loss should use an appropriate target weight, complete diet and monitoring plan established with a veterinarian.
The daily estimate represents the total calorie budget. Treats and extras must be counted within that total so they do not unintentionally increase daily intake.
It provides a starting estimate, not an exact requirement. Veterinary references note substantial individual variation, so weight and body condition must be monitored over time.
