The RER formula produces approximately 662 kcal per day. Applying the 1.6 healthy-neutered-adult factor produces a starting estimate of approximately 1,059 kcal per day, or about 530 kcal across each of two meals. A food portion requires the chosen product's kcal-per-cup value.
Growth and intact or neutered status change the starting factor selected in the calculator.

Puppies—especially large-breed puppies—need a complete growth diet with appropriate nutrient balance. This result is a starting estimate for monitoring, not a prescription.
A common starting method calculates resting energy requirement from body weight and applies a life-stage factor. Actual needs vary, so monitor weight and body condition and use veterinary guidance when adjustment is needed.
Use current weight when your dog is at an appropriate body condition. If your dog is underweight or overweight, ask a veterinarian which target weight and nutrition plan should be used.
Find kcal per cup on the food label or manufacturer information. The calculator divides estimated daily calories by that product-specific value. There is no universal cup amount.
Healthy growing puppies have higher energy needs relative to body weight. The calculator provides separate documented starting factors for puppies under and over four months.
Maintenance-energy references commonly provide different starting factors for healthy intact and neutered adults. Individual activity, body condition, breed and environment can still change actual needs.
Not as a treatment plan. Intentional weight loss should use an appropriate target weight, complete diet and monitoring plan established with a veterinarian.
The estimate represents the total daily calorie budget. Treats and extras must be counted within that total rather than added on top.
