The Basque Shepherd Dog is an ancient landrace breed developed by shepherds in the Basque region for herding and protecting livestock in mountainous terrain. It faced near extinction in the 20th century but was revived by dedicated breeders. Official recognition by the Real Sociedad Canina de España occurred in 1995, and it was included in the AKC's Foundation Stock Service. The breed comes in two coat varieties: the rough-coated Iletsua and the smoother-coated Gorbeikoa, both bred for working livestock in mountainous terrain.
