Portuguese Sheepdog

The Portuguese Sheepdog is a medium-sized herding breed originating from the Serra de Aires region of Portugal. It has a long, wavy coat and is known for its intelligent, loyal, and energetic temperament. The breed is alert and devoted, often described as having a lively, monkey-like gait. Its size is estimated at 43–55 cm in height and 17–27 kg in weight, with a lifespan of 12–14 years. While generally good with children, individual behavior varies. The breed is not well-suited for apartment living due to its energy level.

The Portuguese Sheepdog was developed in the Serra de Aires region of Portugal, likely from Briards brought to the area in the early 1900s. It was used extensively for herding sheep, goats, and cattle. The breed is known locally as 'cão macaco' (monkey dog) for its lively antics and monkey-like appearance. Its exact history is not fully documented, and recognition status varies by registry. The breed's origins are tied to its working role in the mountainous terrain of Serra de Aires.
